Fractions
This interactive teaching program (ITP) is an ICT-based tool to support the exploration of part numbers. Fractions ITP allows the child or teacher to represent and compare fractions on fraction strips. The displayed strips can be labelled as a vulgar fraction, a decimal fraction (to three decimal places) or a percentage, and the ratio of yellow to green parts of each strip can also be displayed.
Opportunities to use and apply
Possible contexts include:
- money, e.g. Find 1/10 of £1 and express in money notation.
- measures, e.g. I need to cut 0.4 m of ribbon from a 1-metre length. What fraction is left?
- use in problems, e.g:
- I have 24 sweets in my pocket. I give Anthony 1/3 and Rose 0.25 of the 24 sweets. How many sweets do I have left?
- Jay buys a 2-litre bottle of lemonade. He drinks 1/4 of the lemonade and spills 0.4 of it. How many millilitres are left?
Confirming learning
Ask probing questions such as:
- Thomas has the digit cards:
1, 5, 6, 9
Arrange the digits to make this correct.
- Kaushi says 7/10 can be written as 10.7. Oliver says it should be 0.7 and Ravi says it is 0.07.
Which of them is correct? Can you draw a picture to help explain who is correct and why?
