Tell the time
This interactive teaching program (ITP) is an ICT-based tool to support the exploration of telling the time. Tell the time ITP allows the child or teacher to set and compare times on an on-screen analogue and digital clock.
Opportunities to use and apply
Possible contexts include:
- cooking, e.g. The pie has to cook for 25 minutes. What time could it go into and come out of the oven?
- work out the actual time if the clock is 10 minutes, 20 minutes, one hour or five minutes slow.
- keeping a diary of how children spend their time during a school day, e.g. How long do you spend each day at school, watching TV, playing computer games? How do you know?
- calculating elapsed time, e.g. How many minutes is it since you arrived at school, came in from play, got up?
Confirming learning
Ask probing questions such as:
- Children need to eat their lunch between 12 o'clock and 1.30pm. They are allowed 45 minutes. Can you tell me three possible pairs of start and end times?
- Kevin leaves home at quarter past eight and arrives in school at 20 to nine. How long does his journey take? How did you work this out?
- Finish labelling the time line. Can you tell me how long it is between the start and finish times?
