Can I work out the mode and range of a set of data and use this to answer questions?

Example review questions

  • Mr Rahman’s class did a survey of prices of packs of dried fruit at local shops and the market. The prices they found were:
    49p, 48p, 99p, £1.19, 56p, 99p, 49p, 76p, 49p, £1.29
    What is the mode of the prices? What is the range of the prices? How do you know?
  • During the 12 days of Christmas, the mid-day temperatures, in °C, were:
    3, –1, 5, –1, 1, 0, 2, 5, 5, 1, –2, –2
    What is the mode of these temperatures? What is the range? What does this tell you about the weather over Christmas?

Number spinners

itp_number_spinners.png

This interactive teaching program (ITP) is an ICT-based tool to support the exploration of number, reasoning and problem solving. Number spinners ITP allows the child or teacher to generate 3, 4, 5 or 6 random numbers on up to 3 spinners. Numbers from 0 to 99 can be displayed.

Opportunities to use and apply

Possible contexts include:

  • finding out the range of heights of children in the Early Years Foundation Stage;
  • working out the most commonly needed sizes of jumper in different year groups and helping to plan the school order;
  • working out the dimensions needed when planning play equipment for the Early Years Foundation Stage area;
  • working out whether the overall class ability in the long jump is improving.

Confirming learning

Ask probing questions such as:

  • Write a different number in each of these boxes so that the range of the three numbers is 8.

    box  box  box
  • Write a number in each of these boxes so that the mode of the five numbers is 9.

  • The mode of a set of ten numbers is 6 and the range is 9. What could the ten numbers be?
